EALA MP Calls for Suspension of Member States That Fail to Pay Contributions
By Joseph Ngilisho, ARUSHA
East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament Kim Rut Gai has called for strict measures against member states that fail to meet their financial obligations to the East African Community (EAC).
Speaking during a parliamentary debate at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, the legislator said that some member states have been delaying or failing to pay their contributions for extended periods, a situation that is negatively affecting the implementation of the Community’s activities and programs.
He noted that there have been instances where EAC institutions continued operating for eight to nine months without receiving the required funds from certain member states, placing significant pressure on the functioning of the regional bloc.
According to the MP, the long-term solution lies in member governments fully complying with the provisions of the EAC Treaty regarding the payment of contributions and enforcing disciplinary measures against countries that fail to honor their obligations.
“We must uphold our treaty. Countries that do not pay their contributions should face sanctions, including the suspension of certain membership rights until they fulfill their obligations,” he said.
He added that such measures would strengthen accountability among member states and ensure that EAC development programs and projects are not disrupted due to financial shortages.
His remarks come as EALA continues deliberations on various financial and operational matters affecting EAC institutions, with the aim of strengthening regional cooperation and development.
