HON. LUKUMAY PRESSURES GOVERNMENT OVER CONSTRUCTION OF HEALTH WORKERS’ HOUSING IN ARUMERU WEST
By Joseph Ngilisho | Dodoma
Raising a question in Parliament today, Dr. Lukumay began by commending President Samia Suluhu Hassan for allocating more than TZS 5 billion, funds that facilitated the construction of five health centres in Arumeru West Constituency.
He noted that through the allocated funds, four of the health centres are already operational and providing a range of essential medical services, including maternal surgical procedures and emergency obstetric care, a development he described as a significant relief to residents of the area.
Despite the progress recorded, the legislator expressed concern over the persistent shortage of staff housing in some of the newly established facilities, a situation that forces healthcare workers to reside far from their duty stations.
“Three health centres still lack residential houses for healthcare personnel, a challenge that compels medical staff to live far away from the facilities and, in some instances, delays the provision of critical services to wananchi,” Dr. Lukumay stated.
He identified the affected facilities as those located in the wards of Oldonyosambu, Mbuyuni, Olorien and Nduruma, where residents continue to require timely access to healthcare services, particularly emergency and maternal healthcare.
Consequently, Dr. Lukumay sought clarification from the Government on when construction of staff housing units at the said facilities would commence in order to guarantee efficient and timely healthcare delivery as envisaged.
Responding to the question, the Deputy Minister for Health stated that the Government is continuing to implement its nationwide programme aimed at strengthening healthcare infrastructure, including the construction of residential houses for health workers, with the objective of enhancing efficiency in service delivery across health centres and hospitals in the countrqy.
