LUKUMAY PAYS TRIBUTE TO SOKOINE, HAILS PRESIDENT SAMIA AS A LEADER UPHOLDING HIS LEGACY IN ACTION

Member of Parliament for Arumeru West, Johannes Lukumay, has described the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, as among the country’s top leaders who are actively preserving and implementing the legacy and vision of former Prime Minister, Edward Moringe Sokoine.
Dr. Lukumay made the remarks during the 42nd anniversary commemoration of Sokoine’s death, held at his home in Monduli Juu, Monduli District in Arusha Region. The event brought together various government leaders and citizens to honor the life and contributions of the late statesman.
He noted that Sokoine earned immense respect for his integrity, patriotism, and firm stance in safeguarding national resources, particularly through his fight against economic sabotage and his efforts to promote self-reliance through agriculture and food production.
“Sokoine was a man of action. He believed in hard work, fighting corruption, and ensuring every Tanzanian participates in building the nation’s economy. Today, when we look at President Samia’s leadership, we clearly see efforts to advance what he stood for,” Lukumay said.
The legislator further highlighted Sokoine’s contribution to the education sector, recalling that he advised Tanzania’s first President, Julius Kambarage Nyerere, to expand access to free education—an initiative that enabled many Tanzanians, especially from marginalized communities, to attend school.
He said the current government under President Samia has continued this vision by ensuring free education from pre-primary to advanced secondary levels, while also strengthening higher education loans and introducing special scholarship programs, particularly in the health sector.
Additionally, Lukumay emphasized that Sokoine strongly advocated for food production and economic self-reliance, encouraging citizens to engage in agriculture to reduce dependence on imported food.
“Today, we see that emphasis being carried forward through policies and strategies of the Sixth Phase Government aimed at boosting agriculture and ensuring national food security,” he added.
In another development, Lukumay pointed out that Sokoine was a strong advocate for women’s rights and development, believing that educating a girl child is key to the progress of society as a whole.
The commemoration was marked by a special prayer service held in memory of Sokoine, attended by government leaders, family members, and members of the public, who joined together in prayers for the late leader.
During the service, leaders—including the late Sokoine’s widows—paid their respects by laying wreaths at his gravesite before proceeding with special prayers, in a solemn event filled with deep emotion and reverence.
Lukumay called on Tanzanians to continue honoring Sokoine’s legacy through action, including hard work, integrity, and patriotism.
The event was attended by government officials, members of the Sokoine family, and citizens from across Arusha Region, all gathered to remember his significant contribution to nation-building.
