The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and HIV/AIDS Affairs, Johannes Lukumay, has praised the Sixth Phase Government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan for making significant investments in the health sector aimed at enabling Tanzania to achieve self-reliance in the production of medicines and medical supplies.

Dr. Lukumay said the progress currently being witnessed in the construction and promotion of pharmaceutical industries in the country is a direct result of President Samia’s commitment and directives to reduce Tanzania’s dependence on imported health products.

He noted that the initiative has been prioritized under the National Five-Year Development Plan, with the government placing strong emphasis on strengthening local industries to improve the availability of medicines and medical equipment for citizens.

“Personally, I would like to thank Her Excellency President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for the continued investment in the health sector since she assumed office. Her directives have laid the foundation for the expansion of pharmaceutical manufacturing in the country,” Dr. Lukumay said.

He stated that President Samia’s vision is to see Tanzania attain substantial capacity in the production of medicines and medical supplies by 2030, a move expected to improve healthcare services while also strengthening the national economy through the health industry.

According to Dr. Lukumay, President Samia aspires to see Tanzania not only achieve self-sufficiency in medicines and medical supplies, but also become one of the countries exporting such products to international markets.

He explained that Tanzania currently produces only about 10 percent of its pharmaceutical and medical supply needs, but the government has developed a strategy to increase local production capacity to between 60 and 65 percent by 2030.

Dr. Lukumay added that the move will enhance the security of medicine supply in the country, reduce the cost of importing health products, and create employment opportunities for Tanzanians through the growth of the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector.

He further called upon both local and foreign investors to take advantage of the existing opportunities in pharmaceutical and medical equipment manufacturing, noting that the government continues to improve the investment environment to ensure the sector becomes a key driver of national development.
