DR. JOHANNES Lukumay, Member of Parliament for Western Arumeru, has officially received the extensive water pipeline network for the Arusha City water project, valued at TZS 525 billion. The initiative is hailed as a transformative intervention for residents of Kimnyaki, Tarakwa, Siwandeti, Kiranyi, Olorien, and surrounding areas.
The handover ceremony took place in Siwandeti Sub-Village, Kiranyi Ward, where the Arusha Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (AUWSA) formally transferred the infrastructure to MP Lukumay on behalf of the beneficiaries.
Dr. Lukumay described the project as a long-term solution to the persistent challenge of access to safe and clean water, emphasizing that it marks the beginning of implementing the government’s pledge to ensure every citizen receives water close to their homes.
"This handover signifies the tangible start of the government’s commitment to bring water closer to every household," said Dr. Lukumay.
He further noted that under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, the Sixth Phase Government has made substantial investments in the water sector to address long-standing public challenges. He urged residents to safeguard the critical infrastructure to ensure its sustainability, highlighting that community cooperation is pivotal to the success of development projects.
Residents of Kimnyaki, Tarakwa, Siwandeti, and Olorien have already begun benefiting from safe and clean water following the rollout of the project, which has a total cost exceeding TZS 2.7 billion.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ngaramtoni Area Manager, Engineer Ansila Temu, stated that the handed-over pipelines extend 4.5 kilometers and have a diameter of three units, designed to further advance the project serving these areas. The entire project spans 67 kilometers, aimed at ensuring reliable and secure water access for all residents.
"So far, 8.5 kilometers of the pipeline have been laid, and work continues across various sections to complete the project on schedule. In areas where construction is complete, residents are already receiving water through designated collection points, with 17 water kiosks operational in Kimnyaki," said Engineer Temu.
Lukumay Receives Commendations
Baraka Simion, Chairman of Arusha District Council, praised Dr. Lukumay for his efforts in facilitating the project while using the platform to highlight ongoing challenges within the constituency.
Simion noted that some areas still face water issues due to high fluoride content, particularly in Oldonyowasi and Oldonyosambu, requiring urgent attention. He also pointed out the need to upgrade road infrastructure to support economic activities.
"We recognize the good progress, but more efforts are needed to improve roads, which are critical for opening economic opportunities for our citizens," Simion stated.
The roads mentioned include Malula–Nduruma–Bwawani, Sokon II–Bangata, and other rural roads leading to Kiterai and surrounding areas.
Attendees of the ceremony expressed optimism about the project, emphasizing that it will reduce the long-standing burden of traveling long distances to access water.
CCM Commends Western Arumeru MP
Nicolaus Sawa, CCM Secretary for Politics and Development in Arusha District Council, stressed the importance of cooperation between government leaders and MPs, commending Dr. Lukumay for ensuring that wards covered by the TZS 525 billion project directly benefit.
"This is a clear demonstration of CCM’s commitment to citizen welfare. These pipelines exemplify the tangible results achieved when we collaborate wisely and patriotically," said Sawa.
The ceremony was attended by government officials, residents, and CCM members, all acknowledging the benefits of the ongoing project for the residents of Western Arumeru and neighboring areas.
The initiative is part of the Sixth Phase Government’s efforts to enhance social services nationwide and is expected to be a major relief for thousands of residents in the affected wards.
