LUKUMAY OPENS DOORS FOR INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP TO STRENGTHEN HEALTH SERVICES IN ARUMERU
By Joseph Ngilisho – INDIA
The Member of Parliament for Arumeru West Constituency, Dr. Johannes Lembulung Lukumay, has taken a significant step toward strengthening the health sector in his constituency following a strategic visit to Pushpawati Singhania Research Institute (PSRI) Hospital in New Delhi, India, on March 3, 2026.
During high-level discussions with the hospital’s leadership, both parties agreed to establish a direct partnership aimed at improving the quality of healthcare services at Olturumet District Hospital. The collaboration is expected to be implemented in coordination with Tanzania’s Ministry of Health and the Prime Minister’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (TAMISEMI).
Medicines, Medical Equipment and Capacity Building
Under the proposed framework, PSRI Hospital will support Olturumet District Hospital in accessing essential medicines and critical medical equipment. This intervention is anticipated to address persistent shortages and significantly enhance the delivery of quality healthcare services to residents of Arumeru West.
The partnership will also prioritize professional capacity building for healthcare workers through specialized training programs. In addition, both institutions agreed to introduce a staff exchange program designed to facilitate knowledge transfer, skills development, and exposure to advanced clinical practices and hospital management systems.
Joint Research on Non-Communicable Diseases
In response to the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancer, the two institutions resolved to initiate joint research initiatives. These studies will assess the magnitude of NCDs within the community and inform the development of evidence-based prevention and treatment strategies.
The move reflects a broader global shift toward investing in research and preventive healthcare, particularly at the Primary Health Care (PHC) level, which remains a central pillar of the partnership.
Strengthening Primary Health Care and Outreach Services
Beyond research and training, the collaboration will reinforce Primary Health Care services and facilitate the deployment of mobile medical outreach clinics to underserved rural communities facing infrastructural challenges.
The initiative seeks to bring essential services closer to the people, reduce treatment costs, and expand access to healthcare for vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, and pregnant women.
Planned Visit to Tanzania
To advance the implementation phase, senior officials from PSRI Hospital are expected to visit Tanzania in June 2026. The visit will include engagements with government leaders at various levels to formalize operational frameworks and accelerate execution of the agreed initiatives.
The anticipated visit is expected to mark the official commencement of this international partnership, which, if fully realized, could serve as a model for leveraging global expertise and resources to benefit local communities in Arumeru West and the nation at large.
Overall, Dr. Lukumay’s initiative signals a new chapter of development diplomacy in the health sector—one focused on transforming district-level healthcare delivery through structured international collaboration and professional exchange.
Ends.
