LUKUMAY PRESSES AWESO OVER DELAY IN DISTRIBUTION OF SH2.7 BILLION WATER PIPES IN ARUMERU WEST

Dr Lukumay raised the concern during discussions with Minister Aweso in Parliament yesterday, September 2, 2026, seeking clarification on when residents living around the project would begin benefiting from the water infrastructure.
The Sh520 billion project is being implemented at Olmuringiringa Village in Kimunyak Ward, Arumeru West, with the broader objective of improving water supply to Arusha City.
During the discussions, Dr Lukumay reminded Minister Aweso of his long-standing request for the Government to connect wards bordering the project to the water distribution network so that communities living close to the source and project infrastructure can also benefit from the investment.
He said the matter had also been raised by Prime Minister Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba during his official visit to Arumeru West in February 2026.
According to Dr Lukumay, the Prime Minister said during the visit that President Samia Suluhu Hassan had set aside Sh2.7 billion for the purchase of water pipes to facilitate the distribution of water to wards surrounding the project.
However, the MP said the distribution of the pipes was expected to commence in March 2026, but implementation had yet to begin as scheduled.
Dr Lukumay consequently pressed Minister Aweso to provide a clear implementation timetable for the delivery of the pipes and ensure that residents in the affected areas begin accessing water.
He identified Sambasha, Kimunyak, Oloirien, Tarakwa and Kiranyi wards as areas that should be given priority, arguing that they are located close to the project.
“When will the Government deliver the pipes and begin supplying water to these wards?” Dr Lukumay asked, among other questions directed at the Water Minister.
In response, Minister Aweso assured Dr Lukumay that the Government would act on the matter as soon as possible.
He said the Government’s financial payment system had been opened, allowing the implementation process to proceed.
Minister Aweso further said his ministry would follow up on the procurement and distribution of the pipes, as well as the extension of water services to the identified wards, to ensure the project is implemented within the expected timeframe.
The exchange comes as the Government continues to invest heavily in major water projects across Arusha, amid growing calls from communities hosting such projects to directly benefit from the infrastructure being developed in their areas.
