LUKUMAY URGES GOVERNMENT TO OPEN DOORS FOR HOTEL INVESTORS IN ARUMERU

Arumeru West Member of Parliament, Dr Johannes Lukumay, has urged the government to accelerate efforts to attract local and foreign investors to establish three- to five-star hotels in Engorika, Kiutu Ward, saying the move would boost tourism and create more economic opportunities for residents.
Dr Lukumay made the call in Parliament while asking a supplementary question to the minister responsible for tourism, saying Arumeru West was among the areas with significant tourism potential in northern Tanzania.
He wanted to know what measures the government was taking to attract investors to develop modern accommodation facilities, particularly three- and five-star hotels, to meet the needs of tourists and stimulate other economic activities in the area.
“Arumeru West is a key gateway to tourism in northern Tanzania. What strategy does the government have to attract investors to build three- or five-star hotels in Engorika, Kiuto Ward, in order to promote tourism?” Dr Lukumay asked.
Dr Lukumay also used the opportunity to congratulate President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her efforts to strengthen leadership and national development.
He further commended Deputy Minister of State in the President’s Office (Planning and Investment), Dr Pius Chaya, for his visit to Arumeru West, where he toured private-sector investments, including a factory involved in the production of healthcare products.
Responding to the question, Dr Chaya said the government had begun placing greater emphasis on areas in Arusha with strong tourism and investment potential, with Arumeru among the areas being targeted.
He said the government was seeking to attract investors to build modern hotels, including five-star facilities, as part of efforts to expand Tanzania’s capacity to accommodate tourists visiting the country.
“Among our priorities and strategies for attracting investors in the tourism sector, Arumeru is one of the areas we have started working on to ensure we attract investors to build modern hotels, five-star hotels and tourism facilities,” Dr Chaya said.
He said the investments would not only strengthen the tourism sector but also contribute to Arumeru’s economic growth by creating employment and expanding business and service opportunities for local communities.
Dr Chaya also praised Dr Lukumay for his efforts to promote private-sector participation in the development of his constituency, saying his visit to Arumeru West had enabled him to see first-hand the investments already taking place and the opportunities available.
“Arumeru West is part of Arusha Region, and we recognise that Arusha is a region we rely on heavily for tourism,” Dr Chaya said.
He pledged that the government would continue working with Dr Lukumay and other stakeholders to identify and develop tourism investment opportunities for the benefit of local communities and the nation as a whole.
The proposed investment drive is expected to strengthen Arumeru West’s position as an emerging tourism destination in northern Tanzania. Increased investment in hotels and tourism services could also encourage visitors to stay longer in the area while creating a wider chain of economic activities for local businesses and residents.
