LUKUMAY STEPS IN TO HELP CHILD WITH HEART CONDITION, OPENS PATH TO TREATMENT

ARUSHA. Arumeru West MP, Dr Johannes Lembulung Lukumay, has stepped in to help a young girl battling a serious heart condition that requires surgery, after visiting her family on Sunday, August 16, 2026.

Dr Lukumay visited the family of Ms Oliver Thobias, the mother of Charity Tumaini Mwenyewe, following an appeal for public support to raise funds for the child’s treatment.

Charity has been experiencing persistent fatigue and difficulty breathing, particularly when walking or running. Her condition prompted the family to seek medical attention at several health facilities in Arusha, but the problem persisted.

The child was eventually referred to the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) in Dar es Salaam for further investigations and specialised treatment.

According to the family, medical examinations at JKCI established that Charity has a heart condition requiring surgery.

However, the family has been unable to raise the more than Sh9 million reportedly needed to meet the cost of the operation, forcing them to take the child back home while continuing to seek financial assistance.

Dr Lukumay said he decided to visit the family after coming across social media appeals seeking public assistance for Charity’s treatment.

The visit was aimed at establishing the child’s condition and understanding the challenges facing the family before exploring possible ways of helping her access the treatment recommended by doctors.

The MP expressed his commitment to working with the family and other stakeholders to find a solution to the child’s medical needs, particularly given that surgery has been identified as the required intervention.

His intervention comes as the family continues to appeal to individuals, institutions and other well-wishers to contribute towards Charity’s treatment and give her an opportunity to return to a normal life.

The family said public support remains critical in raising the funds needed for the operation, expressing hope that well-wishers will respond to the child’s plight and help secure the specialised treatment she urgently needs.
