LUKUMAY PRESSURES GOVERNMENT OVER STALLED OLDONYOSAMBU WATER PROJECT
By Arushadigital | DODOMA
Member of Parliament for Arumeru West, Dr. Johannes Lukumay, has called on the Government to clarify when it will release the remaining funds required to complete the Oldonyosambu Water Supply Project, valued at TSh 6 billion, whose implementation has stalled despite reaching 52 percent completion.
Dr. Lukumay raised the concern in Parliament through a supplementary question, seeking an update on the project's status after the Government disbursed TSh 3 billion, while the remaining TSh 3 billion due to the contractor has yet to be released.
He noted that the delay has continued to affect residents of Oldonyosambu Ward, who have long awaited access to reliable clean and safe water services, as water shortages persist in the area.
“The project is worth TSh 6 billion. The Government has already paid TSh 3 billion, but an additional TSh 3 billion is still owed to the contractor. The project has currently reached 52 percent implementation but has come to a standstill. The Government should tell us when the remaining funds will be released so that the people of Oldonyosambu can finally benefit from this essential service,” Dr. Lukumay said.
Responding to the question in Parliament, Deputy Minister for Water, Kundo Mathew, acknowledged the challenges facing the Oldonyosambu Water Project and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to its completion.
He said the project, valued at TSh 6 billion, has already attained 52 percent progress, while the contractor is awaiting payment of the outstanding TSh 3 billion to resume construction works.
Mr. Mathew stated that the Government has prioritized the project and that once funds become available, they will be disbursed directly to the contractor to ensure the remaining works are completed and residents begin receiving clean and safe water services.
“This is one of the projects we are closely monitoring because of its importance to the people it serves. The Government’s objective is to ensure that the project is completed and that the water challenges facing residents of Oldonyosambu and surrounding areas are effectively addressed,” he said.
He further emphasized that the Government will continue prioritizing strategic water projects across the country to improve access to safe and reliable water services for citizens.
Ends.
