DR. LUKUMAY ELECTED CHAIRPERSON OF THE PARLIAMENTARY STANDING COMMITTEE ON HEALTH AND HIV/AIDS

DODOMA — The Member of Parliament for Arumeru West Constituency, Dr. Johannes Lembulung Lukumay, has been elected Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and HIV/AIDS, a move widely interpreted as a strong vote of confidence by Parliament in his academic credentials, leadership capacity, and experience in the critical health sector.Dr. Lukumay was elected on January 13, 2026, in Dodoma during the official formation of leadership for Parliament’s Standing Committees. Members of Parliament entrusted him with the position in recognition of his extensive background in health-related matters, social policy, and public service.
Speaking shortly after his election, Dr. Lukumay pledged to use the position to strengthen oversight of health services across the country, advocate for equitable access to quality healthcare for all citizens, and intensify the fight against HIV/AIDS through evidence-based and inclusive strategies.
“The health of Tanzanians is the foundation of national development. The Committee will work closely with the Government, development partners, and communities to ensure that health policies and programmes are effectively implemented and truly reflect the real needs of the people,” said Dr. Lukumay.
Residents of Arumeru West Constituency, together with various stakeholders, have welcomed the appointment, describing it as a great honour for the constituency and the Arusha Region at large. They expressed optimism that Dr. Lukumay’s leadership will bring positive and lasting reforms to Tanzania’s health sector.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and HIV/AIDS is mandated to oversee and advise on the implementation of health sector policies, plans, and budgets. Its responsibilities include combating HIV/AIDS infections, improving hospital and primary healthcare services, and ensuring that the right to health for all Tanzanians is protected and promoted.
