Dr.Johannes Lembulung Lukumay, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and HIV/AIDS, has spearheaded the signing of a landmark partnership agreement between EANNASO and the European Union to launch a comprehensive Maternal and Child Health, Reproductive Health, and Youth Rights Programme in Tanzania.

The agreement marks a significant milestone in strengthening reproductive health services and expanding youth-friendly healthcare access nationwide. The initiative is expected to contribute to a reduction in maternal and neonatal mortality rates while enhancing public awareness of reproductive health rights—particularly benefiting communities in Arumeru West Constituency.

The signing ceremony took place on February 19, 2026, in Nairobi, during a regional workshop that convened policymakers, legislators, and health stakeholders from across the Great Lakes region. The forum focused on strengthening policy frameworks, fostering regional collaboration, and accelerating implementation of youth-centered and maternal health programmes across Africa.

Speaking after the signing, Dr. Lukumay described the initiative as a strategic investment in the nation’s future, emphasizing that improved reproductive health services are fundamental to sustainable development. He noted that safeguarding maternal and youth health directly strengthens human capital and supports long-term economic growth.

Leaders and observers at the event commended Dr. Lukumay’s commitment to advancing inclusive health policies and mobilizing international partnerships. His role in bringing together regional and global stakeholders was recognized as instrumental in expanding access to quality healthcare services in Tanzania.

Implementation of the programme is expected to deliver tangible improvements in healthcare facilities, expand community health education, and strengthen integrated reproductive health services for young people and mothers—supporting Tanzania’s broader national health and development goals.
